Why St Kilda roof cavities overheat

Whirlybirds (turbine roof vents) clear the hot, moisture-laden air that builds up in a roof cavity. In summer that trapped heat radiates down into the rooms below; in winter, warm damp air condenses in the cavity and feeds mould. A few correctly placed vents let that air escape, easing the load on your cooling and protecting the roof structure.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in St Kilda

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

St Kilda whirlybird installation — your questions

It depends on roof area and pitch, but most homes need two to four turbines placed high on the roof to move air effectively. We assess your roof and recommend the right number rather than overselling.
They reduce the heat that builds up in the roof cavity and radiates down into your rooms, which eases the load on cooling. They are not an air conditioner, but on hot days the difference upstairs is noticeable.
Not when it is flashed correctly. The failure point on cheap installs is the flashing, which is why we bed and seal it properly under the tile course so the finish is fully weatherproof.
Yes. In winter warm, moist air rises into the roof and condenses, feeding mould and dampness. Venting that air out protects the roof structure and insulation year-round.
