Whirlybird Installation · Elsternwick
Elsternwick's Edwardian and interwar homes near Rippon Lea were built well before modern roof ventilation standards, so the roof cavity in many of these homes has little way to shed heat or moisture on its own. A whirlybird fixes that passively, using wind movement and the natural rise of hot air to draw it continuously out of the cavity. On period terracotta and slate roofs we flash the install carefully under the tile or slate course so it stays weatherproof and sits sympathetically on an older roof; on concrete tile it's a more straightforward fit. With the suburb's heavy tree canopy keeping many roofs shaded, moisture build-up in the cavity is as much a concern here as summer heat.
Elsternwick's mature tree canopy keeps roof cavities cooler but also damper for longer through winter, so venting here does real work clearing trapped moisture that could otherwise sit against old timber.
Local roof weather
Elsternwick sees around ~6 days above 35°C a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity turns into a heat store right above your ceilings.

The process
We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.
Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.
On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.
The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.
Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.
Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.
