Whirlybird Installation · Upwey
Upwey's timber homes were built well before roof ventilation was standard, and even later brick builds on the suburb's steep, heavily treed blocks can trap heat and, more significantly, moisture under the dense mountain ash canopy typical of the Dandenong Ranges. A whirlybird uses wind and rising heat to continuously draw hot, damp air out of the roof cavity, reducing the moisture that can otherwise sit against roof timbers in this consistently shaded, humid environment. It's a straightforward retrofit suited to Colorbond, concrete and terracotta tile alike.
Upwey's dense forest canopy creates a consistently humid roof cavity environment, so ventilation here is as much about managing moisture and preventing timber rot as it is about summer heat.
Local roof weather
Upwey sees around ~3 days above 35°C a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity turns into a heat store right above your ceilings.

The process
We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.
Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.
On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.
The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.
Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.
Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.
