Why Kinglake roof cavities overheat

Kinglake gets far fewer hot days than the suburbs below, so whirlybirds here do more work clearing winter and year-round dampness than fighting summer heat. Roof cavities under heavy shade and constant moisture can hold damp air that condenses and feeds mould in the timbers, and venting that out protects the structure. On tile roofs we lift the tile course, cut a clean penetration, bed the flashing watertight and seat the turbine; on the Colorbond roofs common on rebuilt Kinglake homes, the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting with the same care.

With so few hot days, ventilation at Kinglake is really about managing near-constant dampness in the roof cavity rather than summer heat — a different job to what whirlybirds do in most Melbourne suburbs.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Kinglake

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Kinglake whirlybird installation — your questions

Yes — up here they're doing more work managing cavity dampness and condensation than cooling. Venting the moist air out protects the roof timbers from mould, which matters in this wet climate.
Yes. Many Kinglake homes rebuilt after 2009 are Colorbond, and the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting — a routine job for us.
Not when flashed correctly, and given Kinglake's rainfall we take extra care with the flashing detail to make sure the install is fully weatherproof.
