Why Heidelberg roof cavities overheat

Heidelberg's older homes, many built well before ceiling ventilation was standard, trap heat in the roof cavity through summer and hold onto moisture through the cooler, shaded months near the Yarra's tree-lined flats. A whirlybird uses wind and the natural rise of hot air to continuously exhaust that trapped air, with no power needed to run it. Fitting one to an older terracotta roof means carefully lifting the tile course, cutting a clean penetration and bedding the flashing so it stays watertight, taking particular care on aged tiles that are more brittle than newer stock.

Heidelberg's older, pre-ventilation-era homes trap both summer heat and canopy-driven moisture in the roof cavity near the Yarra, so a whirlybird helps on both fronts provided it's fitted carefully to older, more brittle tile.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Heidelberg

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Heidelberg whirlybird installation — your questions

It helps with the ceiling cavity specifically, continuously drawing out warm, moist air that builds up in older, poorly ventilated roof spaces near the shaded river corridor, which can reduce condensation issues in the ceiling over time.
Yes, we simply take more care lifting older, more brittle tiles than we would on a newer roof, and bed the flashing properly so the roof stays fully watertight once the turbine is fitted.
It depends on the actual roof area and pitch rather than a standard number, though most homes here need two to three turbines. We measure the roof before recommending a specific count.
