Why Hallam roof cavities overheat

Hallam's brick veneer homes from the 1970s through the 1990s were built with limited roof ventilation, and combined with the suburb's higher rainfall band, that means the roof cavity can hold both summer heat and winter moisture longer than it should. A whirlybird draws that air out continuously using wind and rising heat, with no power needed. On the standard concrete tile roofs across the suburb it's a straightforward install, with the flashing bedded under the tile course to stay weatherproof through Hallam's wetter weather; on Colorbond infill it fits directly into the sheet metal.

Hallam's rainfall runs well above the Melbourne average, so trapped moisture in the roof cavity is a real concern here, not just summer heat, and venting addresses both at once.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Hallam

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Hallam whirlybird installation — your questions

Yes. Roof cavities here hold moisture longer given the higher rainfall, and that moisture sitting against roof timber over years is a real cause of rot, so continuous venting is worth more here than in drier suburbs.
Yes, both matter. A whirlybird draws hot air out of the cavity in summer just as effectively as it clears moisture in winter, so Hallam homes get the benefit both ways.
Most standard Hallam homes need two to four, based on the roof's total area and pitch. We assess your specific roof rather than quoting a fixed number.
