Why Endeavour Hills roof cavities overheat

Endeavour Hills' brick veneer homes were mostly built through the 1980s and 90s, an era when roof ventilation was rarely designed in, so the cavity above the ceiling traps heat all summer and, in the cooler months, holds the moisture that condenses inside an unvented roof space. A whirlybird uses wind and natural convection to continuously draw that air out, easing the heat load radiating into the rooms below and clearing the damp air that would otherwise sit against the roof timbers. With Endeavour Hills recording notably higher rainfall than much of Melbourne, that moisture side of ventilation matters as much as summer heat. We fit the turbine through a neatly cut penetration in the concrete tile, bed the flashing watertight, and match the surrounding tiles back in.

Endeavour Hills' 1980s and 90s homes were built with little roof ventilation, and with rainfall well above Melbourne's average, an unvented cavity holds both summer heat and damp air longer than it should — a whirlybird clears both continuously.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Endeavour Hills

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Endeavour Hills whirlybird installation — your questions

Most brick veneer homes from this era need two to four turbines to ventilate the roof cavity effectively, depending on roof size and layout. We assess the roof rather than fitting a standard number.
Not when it is flashed properly. We bed the flashing under the tile course so the penetration stays watertight, which matters given how much rain Endeavour Hills gets compared to the Melbourne average.
Yes — it also clears the moist air that condenses in an unvented roof cavity through the cooler months, which is a bigger factor in Endeavour Hills given the higher local rainfall.
