Why Coburg roof cavities overheat

Coburg consistently experiences extreme UV peaks during the summer months, and the suburb's relatively low tree canopy coverage creates a very noticeable urban heat island effect, literally turning unventilated roof cavities into massive heat traps. High-quality whirlybirds and powered roof vents aggressively extract this trapped, superheated air from the roof space. This highly effective process makes the inside of your home noticeably more comfortable while significantly reducing your energy costs during the absolute hottest months of the year.

Many older established brick homes and Californian bungalows in Coburg lack modern roof ventilation, making them prime candidates for a thermostatic extraction system to combat the summer heat trapped by solid masonry walls.

The process

How we install a whirlybird

1

Assess the cavity

We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.

2

Position for airflow

Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.

3

Cut & flash

On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.

4

Seat & seal

The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.

Roof types in Coburg

Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.

Our standard

Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.

Coburg whirlybird installation — your questions

It depends on the size of your roof cavity. Typically, a standard-sized home needs at least two whirlybirds to create effective cross-ventilation, but we assess this during the quote.
Whirlybirds extract the superheated air from the roof cavity, which stops that heat from radiating down through your ceiling. This makes the living areas cooler and helps your air conditioning run more efficiently.
Powered or thermostatic vents move a much larger volume of air and only switch on when the roof cavity reaches a certain temperature, making them highly effective for severe summer heat.
