Whirlybird Installation · Castlemaine
Castlemaine's heritage-era homes were mostly built long before roof ventilation was standard, leaving roof cavities with nowhere for summer heat and moisture to escape, a particular issue in the town's inland regional climate where summer temperatures can run hotter than closer to the coast. A whirlybird uses wind and rising heat to continuously draw that air out, reducing ceiling heat load in the house below and cutting moisture that can otherwise sit against older roof timbers. It's a straightforward retrofit on both heritage terracotta and newer concrete tile or Colorbond roofs across the town.
Castlemaine's inland regional climate tends to run hotter in summer than suburban Melbourne, which makes roof ventilation more valuable here for keeping ceiling heat load down.
Local roof weather
Castlemaine sees around ~5 days above 35°C a year, and on those days an unventilated roof cavity turns into a heat store right above your ceilings.

The process
We look at roof size, pitch and existing airflow to work out how many vents you actually need — no over-selling.
Vents go high on the roof where the hottest air collects, balanced with the eave intake so air can actually move through.
On a tiled roof we lift the tiles, cut a neat penetration, and bed the flashing so it is fully weatherproof.
The turbine is seated in the flashing collar and the tiles are reinstated over the apron, leaving a clean, leak-free finish.
Installation differs by roof: on tiled roofs we cut and flash the penetration under the tile course, while on metal roofs the vent is flashed directly into the sheeting. Both need the flashing done properly — a rushed vent install is a classic future leak.
Installations are carried out by an insured team and the workmanship is backed by a 7-Year Workmanship Guarantee and a 10-Year Dulux Acratex Material Warranty.
